Achieving continuous improvements in the logistics sector is possible thanks to the Deming Cycle or PDCA, a system that allows for the analysis and increase of the performance and effectiveness of a company's various processes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logistics has gained significant prominence in recent years, being one of the fastest-growing sectors. The new way of carrying out operations, primarily stemming from the effects of the pandemic, largely involves the direct participation of this sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to data from the Observatory of Transport and Logistics in Spain (OTLE), our country has approximately 140,000 companies that are directly related to the logistics sector. This implies a clear need to maximise their potential and productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a Deming Cycle?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Those companies looking for an increase and improvement in their business activities can rely on a system such as the Deming cycle to carry out an analysis effectively, allowing them to identify and take advantage of all possible opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This system is based on carrying out an analysis guided by four phases: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Plan<\/li>
  2. To do<\/li>
  3. Check<\/li>
  4. Act<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In fact, the acronym of its name in English (PDCA) incorporates it: Plan, do, check, act<\/em>. From these phases, we manage to adapt to the new demands of the logistics sector, stemming from changes in market needs and requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Referred to as a cycle because it is based on the successive repetition of the method, from the phases presented, a self-evaluation of all company activities is carried out to identify weak points or make continuous improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    PDCA: Step by step<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The phases that make up this cyclical system are four:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Planning. This is the first stage, in which, based on prior analysis, the problem is identified and potential tools or means to achieve improvements are proposed, with objectives also being established. In this stage, the problem, the actions to resolve it, and the final objectives are fixed.<\/li>
    2. To do. Once each worker has been assigned a mission, the plan must be put into action. During this process, effective supervision is paramount, both to ensure the final objective and to obtain data from the entire process and identify weak and strong points within the execution.<\/li>
    3. Verify. With the information gathered in the previous step, an analysis is carried out. In this way, we obtain the way in which the processes have been carried out, in which parts errors are made or more inconveniences are encountered, and, similarly, what positive points we observe.<\/li>
    4. Act. In the final stage, decisions are made, taking into account the data obtained from observation and supervision throughout the entire process. Necessary changes are implemented to correct negative aspects. Observed strengths are documented so that they can be integrated into as many aspects as possible of the first stage. It's important to remember that this is a cyclical process involving interaction between the final and initial stages. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The Deming Cycle applied to logistics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The logistics sector provides an unavoidable added value for many businesses. Therefore, achieving constant improvement by applying this system helps to maintain a favourable position. Below is an example of how to apply it to logistics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Stage 1: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Following an analysis of various sectors within our company, we have observed a problem with delivery times slowing down. Our primary objective will be to optimise goods delivery times. How do we achieve this? By considering possible options to achieve this outcome, such as changing routes, utilising return journeys, creating a robust supply chain, or incorporating new technological tools. After considering all options, we have decided on the final plan: we will use the incorporation of technological tools to achieve optimisation of delivery times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Stage 2: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      In this phase, we implement the plan, which in this case would be the different technological tools decided upon. Continuous supervision is very important at this stage, as failures may arise from poor execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Stage 3: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      We collect the information obtained and carry out a complete analysis of the entire process undertaken, observing the positive and negative points. We observe that thanks to the implementation of new software, we have managed to reorganise routes and storage so that delivery times are reduced. The main negative aspect could be the lack of qualified personnel to handle this new tool or the high costs it has incurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Stage 4: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Finally, the tools are implemented, thus achieving an improvement in the problem posed with the incorporation of new technologies. Learning is gained during the process that can be implemented in the initial stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In conclusion, implementing systems such as the Deming Cycle can help undertake significant internal work for improvement and self-knowledge within the company.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
