In a world facing the urgency of combating climate change, the decarbonisation of the transport sector is a crucial challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pollutant emissions from traditional vehicles pose a significant threat to the environment and public health. Reducing dependence on road transport and adopting greener alternatives is therefore imperative for a greener and more resilient future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, the Spanish Government's eco-incentives for rail and maritime transport emerge as fundamental tools to boost the transition towards a more sustainable and digital mobility model. Conceived as economic support measures, they seek to stimulate the use of more environmentally friendly means of transport, such as trains and ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a strategic combination of direct subsidies, user bonuses, vehicle purchase subsidies and infrastructure development, eco-incentives catalyse positive change in the transport sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are eco-incentives?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eco-incentives are financial support given to companies, operators and transport users with the aim of encouraging the use of more sustainable modes of transport, such as rail and maritime transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These subsidies are based on the \"polluter pays\" principle, rewarding those who opt for transport options with a lower environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco-incentives for rail transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Government of Spain has launched an ambitious programme of eco-incentives for rail freight transport<\/a>75 million distributed over three calls for proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This programme has a threefold objective: to consolidate and increase the modal share of rail as an alternative for freight transport; to help operators increase their traffic - making the rail offer more attractive; and to improve environmental performance by encouraging the prioritisation of the use of electric traction systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aid is granted on the basis of the environmental and socio-economic merit of each project, taking into account aspects such as the evolution of the activity, the occupation of freight wagons and the type of locomotive traction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, operators can make use of this aid to, among other measures, improve the quality of services or adjust tariffs, resulting in tangible benefits not only for shippers, but for the supply chain as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco-incentives for maritime transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maritime transport also benefits from the Spanish government's eco-incentives. The aid programme for the promotion of maritime transport<\/a> The initial budget for the freight transport project is 60 million euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The purpose of this programme is twofold: first, to strengthen and broaden the participation of maritime freight transport, improving its environmental impact. Second, to encourage a shift from road to maritime transport through objective sustainability criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in the case of rail transport, aid is granted on the basis of the environmental and socio-economic merit of each project. Factors such as distance travelled, emission reductions achieved and the use of certain vehicles and vessels are taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits of eco-incentives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eco-incentives for rail and maritime transport have a positive impact in a number of areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
